My daughter worked through this book in 90 school days, one semester, in 5th grade. She loved to read it. I often read aloud to her also, and I really enjoyed it. All of Joy Hakim's books are a pleasure to read (we have this whole series and the History of Science series). My 2nd grader has started picking it up and is on Chapter 9 on his own, just because it is such a great story. I have them write or tell or draw a narration of each chapter and assign a writing project about a topic now and then. Using it with the K12 curriculum (student guide) was great for that one semester we did it for 5th grade. It's hard to find a great secular history that is fun to read and appropriate in content for an 8 year old and a 10 year old, so I just love Joy Hakim's works. I know some critics get worked up about some details not parsed, but this is early middle school level, not college.

Great condition. These books are written for K12 curriculum, but, I highly recommend them as a supplement to any child's history curriculum. Ms. Hakim does a fabulous job and brings a lot of interesting things to history, far from the usual dry and boring history texts from my childhood.

As Described

Used this book for my children thru their virtual school when they were in middle school. My kids enjoyed them. A few people might not like how Joy is biased, but if you don't mind Joy Hakim, then its good enough.

Engaging presentation of Native American to post Revolutionary America. Lots of interesting tidbits to draw in readers ages 10-99. Storytelling more like a magazine than a traditional text.

My 3 children all read this book in the 5th -6th grade and they could not put it down, and kept wanting to read ahead. We started by reading it aloud together, and worked through the workbook, and also supplemented by going on Google to further look at certain regions and people in the stories, to look at more first person accounts, diaries, etc.. we had to set a time limit or they would never have gotten around to other subjects. We like the emphasis on first person documentation and seeing many sides to the story, imagining what it must have been like each time a new people arrived, for those already here in America from Canada to the Caribbean and Central America. Beautifully done! A great basis, framework, and yes, we went on to read new history books each year, searching the library as well, for those hard copies that are so delightful to hold in one's hands. Oh, and we walked some of the trails in our US travels, and read the National Parks plaques, and did so much more, for enrichment. Excellent read. Especially if the parent sets the tone, reading the first couple of chapters to get the "author's voice." Love how Joy Hakim asks questions, then leaves it to the reader.

We are going through this as part of 5th grade K12. I am not clear whether the author really understands the meaning of "concise". There is nothing brief or comprehensive about this book. I am not sure whether the intended audience is 5th graders or younger children, but the book is not engaging my 11yo at all. The author is trying to tell a story, but she is all over the place. In the span of 3 pages, she goes from year 1000 to 16th century, then to 18th century only to go back to the 11th. Confusing much? I had to go back and re-read the whole chapter again, trying to make sense of it. The important points are lost in so much fluff. Who cares if we are in capsule or a young Indian boy, you don't have to go that far to make history interesting.Oh, and the editing...and grammar...this is meant to be a school book, so it should be exemplary in terms of grammar and language use. This is how we teach our children. Wouldn't recommend this at all.

My son and I have really looked forward to history lessons with this concise edition of Joy Hakim's The History of US. If you read about 1 chapter a day, you should finish volume A in one semester. It covers pre-Columbian history through the American Revolution.I think this is a great book for about 6th grade history. My son is a 4th grader. At first I thought it was a bit thick, but it looks like we'll finish volume B around the end of the school year. There is an appendix that includes original documents, including the Mayflower Compact, Consitution, Patrick Henry's famous speach, etc. Some of the sidebars have excerpts from original sources, which I liked. From time-to-time, a more global perspective is given. There was a full page devoted to what Columbus would have found if he had made it to China in 1492, and an illustration comparing the size of his ship to the enormous sailing ships the Chinese had around that time. One chapter shows us what was happening in Britain (poverty, Queen Elizabeth, and Shakespeare) when the first colonies were developing. The founding of each colony is explained individually, which was fascinating. Did you know Rhode Island was actually purchased from an Indian Tribe by a Puritan who respected them? Did you know Georgia was begun by a philanthropist who wanted to give men in debtor's prison a second chance, by giving them land and teaching them subsistance farming? That Pennsylvania was the pet project of a Quaker who refused to remove his hat in front of the king . . . and lived to tell about it? Did you know how soon after the Pilgrims and Puritans landed the first college was established? What about the history of public education in America? As it moves along the road to the American Revolution, the key players are introduced: Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and so on. It explains what happened in the French and Indian War, and how that actually laid some of the foundation for the Revolutionary War. It tells of Benjamin Franklin's respect for the Iroquois League, and how that led to the idea of uniting states. Unlike some "modern" US history books, it speaks of the founding fathers respectfully, without over-idealizing them. It's made good dinner conversation:As to the 1-star reviewer--I'm frankly confused by her comment. As someone who has actually read this book, the criticism is nonsensical.
